It looks like Toshiba is full of energy when it's time to think about new HD DVD products. The company just unleashed a new VARDIA hybrid HD DVD / HDD recorder in Japan. The new 600GB RD-A600 and 300GB RD-A300 feature a pair of digital hi-vision HD tuners, Firewire, and HDMI and can write to HD DVD-R and DVD-RAM/R/RW media in addition to their respective hard disks. Impressive? Sony, Panasonic and Samsung should be looking at this product.
How much would you be ready to pay for a product like this? What about ¥200,000 (about $1,643) for the RD-A600? That sounds like a reasonable price for a first generation recorder like this one. The North American model will probably be even lower. The RD-A300 costs $199 less and the only difference is the hard disk size.

Samsung announced an HD-DVD notebool, with a Core Duo T25000, a 17” display with a 1920x1200 resolution, a nice GeForce 7600 graphic card (GDDR3 256MB), an HDMI output, S/PDIF, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, SRS 3D… and of course an HD-DVD player. These notebooks go for a bit more than $3800.

HP is rolling out several HD DVD-based products for the 2006 holiday season. One of them is the HD100 external HD DVD drive (see picture), connecting via USB 2.0, it's a 2x HD DVD reader plus DVD and CD playback. Cyberlink's PowerDVD HD DVD Edition software is included for HD DVD playback. If you're looking to buy a whole new system -- which you'll probably need -- the HP Pavilion m7600n Series PC includes Windows XP Media Center Edition, Intel Viiv technology, HD DVD drive, built-in NTSC tuner and 7.1 surround sound capabilities. For HD on the go, there's always the Pavilion dv9000t laptop with an optional HD DVD and DVD burning drive, 17-inch 1440x900 LCD, HDMI out, 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 GPU.

These two new AuthorScript SDKs enable PC application developers and consumer electronics chip, middleware, and system developers to rapidly integrate and deploy HD-DVD recording and playback functionality in their high-definition video products.
