Who is going to make money with Blu-ray and HD DVD?

Posted by Stephane Dion

Hd_dvd_vs_bluray_1The battle between Sony and Toshiba for the next HD DVD or Blu-ray players and the battle between Sony and Microsoft for the next HD DVD or Blu-ray game player is one of the biggest technology war since Betamax and VHS 25 years ago. But there is not only three or four companies involved, there is nearly 300 companies directly involved in HD DVD and Blu-ray (see partial list here and here) Can they all be wrong? Of course not! We’re not going to see the winners on one side of the battle.  There going to be winners and losers on both sides.  So it’s not only HD DVD vs. Blu-ray.  With a market of 28 billion by 2010, the winners are going to win big.

Besides HD DVD and Blu-ray directly involved companies, the retailing industry is going to have a boost because there is no more money to be made with dvd players at $69 that take 2 hours to sell! Even more, the new technologies are not going to work with your old TV. So, we should see a boost also for Plasma and LCD technologies. What we need to do is to spot who in the retailing industry could benefit the most the HD DVD and Blu-ray battle.
